Google Sheets AI Features: Complete Overview
Google Sheets has integrated AI features that make spreadsheet work faster and easier. From auto-completing patterns to generating insights, these tools help both beginners and advanced users.
Smart Fill — AI Pattern Detection
Smart Fill detects patterns in your data and auto-completes the rest of the column. It can extract parts of text, combine columns, format phone numbers, and more. Available for all Google Sheets users. Access it from Insert > Smart Fill or press Ctrl+Enter when suggestions appear.
💡 Smart Fill needs at least 2 examples to detect a pattern. The more consistent your examples, the better the results.
Explore — Natural Language Data Analysis
The Explore button (star icon in bottom-right) lets you ask questions about your data in plain English. Type "total sales by product" or "average score by category" and it generates formulas, charts, and pivot tables. It also auto-creates visualizations.
💡 Explore works best when your data has clear headers in the first row.
Smart Cleanup — AI Data Cleaning
Smart Cleanup detects and fixes common data issues: trimming spaces, fixing date formats, removing duplicates, and standardizing capitalization. Go to Data > Data cleanup > Cleanup suggestions. It shows a preview of changes before applying them.
Gemini in Google Sheets
Gemini is Google's most advanced AI, integrated into Google Sheets for Workspace and Google One AI Premium subscribers. Use it to generate complex formulas, create macros, analyze data trends, and get contextual suggestions while working.
Automatic Chart Suggestions
When you select data and click Insert > Chart, Google Sheets automatically suggests the best chart type based on your data structure. This AI-powered feature detects whether your data works best as a bar chart, line chart, pie chart, or scatter plot.
