AI for Google Sheets: The Complete Guide
Artificial intelligence is changing how we work with spreadsheets. Google Sheets has integrated AI features that help you write formulas, analyze data, fill patterns, and automate repetitive tasks.
What AI Features Does Google Sheets Have?
Google Sheets includes several AI-powered features: Smart Fill (automatically detects patterns and fills data), Explore (generates charts and insights from natural language questions), Smart Cleanup (fixes formatting and data issues), and Gemini integration for advanced assistance.
Using Smart Fill in Google Sheets
Smart Fill uses AI to detect patterns in your data and auto-complete the rest. Start typing a pattern (like extracting first names from full names or formatting phone numbers) and Smart Fill suggests the remaining values. Press Ctrl+Enter to accept.
💡 Smart Fill works best with clear, consistent patterns. Give it at least 2-3 examples to learn from.
Using Explore for AI Insights
Click the Explore button (star icon) in the bottom-right corner to ask questions about your data in natural language. Type "total sales by region" or "average price per category" and Explore suggests formulas, charts, and pivot tables.
Using Gemini in Google Sheets
If you have a Google One AI Premium plan or a Google Workspace with Gemini, you can use Gemini directly in Google Sheets. Type "Help me organize" to get AI suggestions for structuring your data, creating formulas, and generating insights.
AI for Data Cleaning
Use Smart Cleanup to detect duplicates, fix inconsistent formatting, and standardize data. It can trim extra spaces, fix date formats, and find outliers. Go to Data > Data cleanup > Cleanup suggestions.
